I’ll be back later this week to shoot some interior shots on a busy evening as well. I shot five dishes, each in a variety of setups. The venue is quite cool looking, with great art on the walls, polished cement floor, full bar in the back, and more. If you’re in town, be sure to stop by — the food is great!

The lighting was a balance of long exposures to capture the ambient light (as long as five seconds), and usually a single strobe (although for a few shots I used a second strobe for fill). The main light was shot through a 32” diffusion panel hovering just above the food for a nice, soft light.

I pulled off to shoot it, and once it moved away I climbed a hill to capture its retreat.

The technique used in these photos is a little bit of interesting trickery that I’ll hold onto for now. I’ll be doing a video2brain training as well as a webinar for Nik Software in the upcoming months, and I think I’ll show this then. It was one of those experiments gone right.

He plays nearly every Thursday afternoon there, so if you find yourself in DFW on a Thursday, be sure to look for him.

He called me completely out of the blue yesterday. Said he’d found my card, and just wanted to call and say “hi”. What a kind gentleman!

Problem: You have a web page designed at 1,000 pixels wide, and just looked at it on a new iPad, and were nearly in tears over how badly your graphics and photos looked on there.

Solution: Photographer Duncan Davidson posted some very interesting findings, and I combined that with my own research and present the results at photojoseph.com/retina

(I also have a post specifically about loading images at an optimal resolution on the new iPad on ApertureExpert: Displaying Your Photography On The New iPad)

I shivered my way down there this morning to see if I could spot anything photogenic, and came back with a couple of images.

Frozen Creek @ January 2012 | Canon EOS 5D Mk II & 100mm ƒ/2.8 Macro @ ISO 1000, ƒ/7.1, 1/100

I mentioned at the beginning of the year that I may start doing a B&W series. Let’s see if I can maintain it, but for now, see the first one above. It’s a close-up of a frozen ripple of water; completely abstract and organic. I created the B&W using Silver Efex Pro II and one of my default presets, which I’ve posted here before but here it is again. Next one, I’ll do something different.

The second shot is just cool… it appears to be a tiny flower trapped in ice, or “frozen in time”. I love the way the water has frozen around it; it’s almost as if the temperature plummeted instantly and froze this splash! I simply adore it.
