But now it seems like the 400 port and the 800 port wont both work at the same time... that's why I have them all daisy chained. My Hub is 400 only.

All of the devices are powered. It seems to be unmounting from drive2 and down. Then if I turn that drive off all the others come back online. But I'm still having problems with Super Duper failing in the middle of a backup.

Anyway, maybe I should just change my workflow. I have data from years ago that I don't access very often. But at the same time, when I want to access that data I want it right at my fingertips. That's why I have so many drives hooked up. Do you have any solutions to this problem. (I am a photographer and use lightroom, When I open my lightroom catalog I still want to have access to those images taken years ago)

Thanks,

Matt

Joseph Linaschke comments on Spontaneous FireWire Drive Dismounts? I'd have to look up the specs and I know that it's supposed to be huge (like 100+ devices?) but I've never seen a chain that big actually function in a production environment. I don't think that the FW 800 to 400 conversions are helping, either.

Have you tried adding a hub? Are all or most of your drives powered? Power is a huge problem if you're relying on the FW bus to deliver drive power to more than a drive or two.

-Joseph

matt pavel comments on Spontaneous FireWire Drive Dismounts? I dont have a drobo though. The problem started when I added three new FW800 drives. I used to have 7 Firewire 400 drives... some in a chain and some connected to a splitter. Everything worked fine.

Then when I added the 3 FW800 drives I connected everything in a daisy chain. So I now have fw800>800>800>400>400>400>400>400>400>400 and everything has gone to hell. The drives just eject spontaneously. Mostly when I am trying to do a backup via Super Duper. And a lot of the time Super Duper Just stalls now even when the drives are still mounted.

I have also tried connecting the fw800 to the 800 port and the fw400 drives to the 400 port. in that case the fw400 drives wont even mount??

I am getting really frustrated now as I cannot keep a decent backup system. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Bret comments on Lightning Storm over Ashland

I travel some places with lighting attractions like the northern lights, or the aurora borealis, as they are also known, is a jaw-dropping and mystical moment.

W.E.Brown comments on Richard Don Simms, Banjo Player at the USO at DFW

This guy is really something....with big heart and a lot of talant.....he has given a lot of entertainment and laughs to many
men and women in uniform on their way to and from the combat zone......and makes sure they have a cinnimon roll or cookie
and something good to drink.... You see a lot of lightning pictures of bolts shooting down, but the idea of the electricity rumbling around inside those dark, sidelit clouds, ready to destroy whatever is unfortunate enough to be under it. There's a lot of story in that shot, regardless of whether it's the story of what's actually going on.

Carl Shortt comments on Lightning Storm over Ashland

Spectacular images Joseph.
