Will there be anything from Maui? I went to Maui 8 times in 8 years taking a little better camera each time until my last trip in 2007. Nothing as good as yours, but fun anyway.
My lack now is a good lens. (Canon 40D with EF lenses) If you had to buy one decent lens, which would it be?
I'll understand if you're not a Canon fan and recommend another.
Some of my Maui pics are at http://pennycafe.com/maui
The Pipeline Masters is always North shore, Oahu (that's where the pipeline beach is, and the coral formations that create the insane waves that the competition is famous for). Maui is great too; I have many photos from there. I don't know if I've ever posted 'em… I probably should!
What lens to buy? Always depends on budget, but for a very versatile long zoom that's still affordable, you can't beat the 70-200 f/4.0. Sure it's not as nice as the f/2.8, but it's a fantastically sharp lens and very light weight. I've been using one for years, and while I do covet the f/2.8 (and will probably buy one this year now that the Mark II lens has been announced), that f/4 is and always will be a staple.
If you're at a competition like the pipe and you're a Canon CPS member, they have lenses to loan. I borrowed a 600mm f/4.0 and a 1.6x while I was there. Oh that's fun ;-)
